Sorauren added to Alcohol in Parks list, meeting May 21

Councillor Gord Perks is hosting a virtual meeting May 21 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm to discuss the recent decision to add Sorauren Park to the City’s list of parks allowing majority-age residents to legally drink alcoholic beverages in the park. The Friends of Sorauren Park supports the responsible enjoyment of the park, including everyone pitching in to keep it clean and welcoming.

Here’s the Councillor’s letter:

Hello Friends,

The Alcohol in Parks program allows residents and visitors 19 years of age and older to bring and drink their own alcoholic beverages at select city parks. After a successful pilot project, City Council voted last month to adopt a permanent Alcohol in Parks program and endorsed expanding the program to ensure that at least one park in each city ward be designated to allow personal alcohol consumption.

Sorauren Park has been recommended by Parks, Forestry, and Recreation (PFR) staff to be Ward 4’s designated park to join the Alcohol in Parks program.

To ensure that the community is engaged as part of this process, our office will be hosting a virtual community meeting next week on Tuesday, May 21 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.

This will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the Alcohol in Parks Program and how it will be implemented at Sorauren Park. I will chair the meeting, which will include a presentation from City staff, followed by a Q&A period to allow for discussion.

The link to join the meeting can be found here.

More information on the Alcohol in Parks program is available here.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
