Summer jobs with Friends of Sorauren Park

Thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs program, Friends of Sorauren Park will again be hiring for the summer season to assist with programming and communications in the park. Come work with us!

The CSJ program is aimed at post-secondary students or graduates up to age 30. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents (international students are not eligible).

There are two positions:

  • Coordinator, Special Events
  • Coordinator, Digital and Social Media

Who We Are

The Friends of Sorauren Park (FOSP) is a volunteer-based, non-profit corporation dedicated to the enjoyment and completion of Sorauren Avenue Park in Toronto’s Roncesvalles/Parkdale neighbourhood.

We are a fun group of community members who have volunteered for many years to animate our neighbourhood park and fundraise and advocate for capital improvements.

This is the fifth year we have received support from the Canada Summer Jobs program to hire students to help with our exciting summer program.

Job 1: Coordinator, Special Events

About the job

  • Flexible hours adapted to summer program
  • Flexible start date (no later than June 19)
  • $20.50 per hour plus vacation pay
  • Funded in part by Canada Summer Jobs
  • Post-secondary student or recent graduate, maximum age 30
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident

The Opportunity

The Coordinator, Special Events will work with volunteer board members and other volunteers to help promote, deliver and evaluate the 2023 summer program of public events at the park.

Duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Supporting Outdoor Movie Night events including developing pre-roll of community announcements and trivia, developing and distributing poster and social media marketing and promotion (in partnership with FOSP Digital and Social Media Coordinator), assisting with set-up and tear-down of the monthly Movie Night events
  • Serving as a FOSP primary point of contact at all Monday Farmers’ Markets and Pizza Oven related events assisting with set-up, clean-up, and other day-of responsibilities, in collaboration with our friends at the Sorauren Farmers’ Market
  • Supporting weekly, free, outdoor World Dance Classes weekly during most of June and July in the early evenings
  • Developing strategies to encourage new or increased donations at all FOSP events. Develop and test a new FOSP swag sales strategy
  • Assisting the board with other events, planning, meetings, as needed
  • Submitting regular progress and activity reports

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a community-minded, creative, fun-loving candidate with good communication skills and the ability to work flexible hours around events. Candidates should also be self-starters who can spot opportunities to pitch in or improve existing programs.

Under the Canada Summer Jobs program, candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Sorry, international students are not eligible.

Job 2: Coordinator, Digital and Social Media

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident

The Opportunity

The Digital and Social Media Coordinator will work with volunteer board members and other volunteers to help promote the 2023 summer program of public events at the park, and upgrade and develop the FOSP’s digital media assets.

Duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Supporting development of the Friends of Sorauren Park and Wabash Building Society (WBS) website upgrade transition plan, including collaboration with new web designers (outside vendor) on projects such as content migration
  • Managing website content and design, ensuring systems and reminders are in place for keeping all information current and relevant
  • Developing, managing and executing FOSP 2023 digital communications strategy in partnership with FOSP Special Events Coordinator
  • Taking video and photos and deploying across digital assets as needed
  • Developing a transition plan so new procedures for website updating and social media posting practices can be assumed and maintained by trained volunteers outside the busy summer season
  • Updating the annual Sorauren Park By the Numbers metrics analysis for use in sponsorship kits
  • Pitching in and reporting at Sorauren Park public events such as Outdoor Movie Nights and Farmers’ Market as required
