Railpath extension final design protects for link to Sorauren
The final design for the southward extension of the West Toronto Railpath continues to include a provision for a future bridge into Sorauren Park. A February 26 public meeting in a packed room at Museum of Contemporary Art showed the plans in maps and diagrams.
The Friends of Sorauren Park and Friends of the West Toronto Railpath have advocated for the connection for years. The opportunity exists at the point where the Railpath must cross over the Barrie GO line, near No Frills, to continue its southward route towards downtown. A new bridge at this location will be built to include a jump-off point for a future bridge into Sorauren Park, which would need to cross the Kitchener GO corridor.
While the Railpath extension design is now complete, construction funding is not yet in place, nor is funding for the connection to Sorauren Park. The work is some years in the future.
The Friends of Sorauren Park have attended all the public consultations and have encouraged Railpath designers and contractors to coordinate future work with the designers of the new Wabash Community Centre, Diamond Schmitt Architects working for the city of Toronto.
