The community crew that floods the natural ice rink at Sorauren Park every winter is inviting all volunteers and potential volunteers to an orientation session at the park’s Fieldhouse on Saturday, Nov. 30, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Sorauren Hosers, as they’ve come to be known, will describe what’s involved to flood the rink, show the equipment, and answer questions. They’ll also be signing up recruits.
Each night during the rink season, a different crew of three or four volunteers floods the rink at 9 p.m., weather permitting. In this case, good weather is below-zero temperatures. The season typically runs January and February. No experience is necessary, and each of the seven nightly crews has a veteran crew captain.
No need to register, but if you’d like more information or can’t attend but want to join the flooding crews, use the Contact form to send a message.
This Nov. 30 orientation will be followed by another special rink-focused event Dec. 12, this time featuring rink-makers from across the city who will be sharing best practices. Stay tuned for details.
